Inspired by the skies of Africa and the scattering of humanity within the rural landscape, Mike Smith’s work consists of a series of contemporary simplified and stylized landscapes - the goal being to capture just some of the sense of infinite time and space that exists outside of the city environment. Working in oil on canvas, coloursare saturated, shapes are flattened, and contrast exaggerated.
Smith has been involved with art for most of his life. He was born in Cape Town, and raised in Zimbabwe. He arrived in Canada in the late 80’s.
Originally Smith began studying architecture, but quickly switched to art and
kept the wolf from the door as a multi-national award-winning art director/creative director in Toronto, until moving into the country to paint full-time in 2003.
